In darker times about two decades ago, a certain expat solved the problem of communicating with taxis by having hand-written cards showing his home address, bar, and other important locations. One night, after consuming a beer or ten, he entered a cab and showed the driver the card with his home address. Then he promptly dozed off. Stirring a little later, he found himself nearly at the airport. Eventually, he made it home, very late and considerably out of pocket. What went wrong? He had made the mistake of using both sides of each card. When he handed over the “home” card, he had turned it over by accident, thus showing the “airport” on the reverse side. The moral of the story? Even the best preparations in expat life can go badly awry!

The Nanjinger is running a little late this month, but will be with you shortly. Look for it around town.
