A decade ago, our Spring Festival was dominated by fireworks. Explosions would pepper the city starting about a week before and reach a crescendo on NYE (Chinese) when it was like a war zone. Every street, lane, and path was a launch pad. Over the following days, things quietened down, but built up to a new peak on the 5th day to welcome the God of Wealth (an odd concept). How much damage and injury resulted? Hard to say. How life has now changed. Unless you live far away from the city centre, you are unlikely to even hear an explosion, nevermind seeing the display in the sky. Gone too is the resulting clogging air pollution and stench of gunpowder.

The 7th day of the new year is also significant, being the day when everyone becomes a year older. It is why there is not such a strong tradition of celebrating birthdays in China.
Happy New Year!
