Where not-so-long-ago was La Villa, now stands Clockwork, another addition to the beer bar revolution. With its industrial look, Clockwork sells itself as the epitome of Chinese trends.

Drinkers are greeted with English quotes glowing in neon that set the scene for what is beyond. The long oak bar positioned before an impressive display of rather exotic liquor features six beers on tap; two lagers, two craft IPAs and two of Clockworks very own brew.

The rest of the bar opens up to a spacious lounge area, dimly lit for the nights when worries are set free. Five low sofa tables can accommodate comfortably large groups of friends, colleagues or events.

Fresh and refurbished, Clockwork is the kind of place one can kick one’s heels back and enjoy a beer or two and a cocktail or three. Playlists are tasteful and timely, accommodating a young crowd although a touch too loud. Service is prompt and met with a smile. Signs of a chef lingering around the kitchen area suggest food is available, so be sure to ask for the food menu as well as the drinks. Prices are average for Shanghai Lu while Happy Hour offers buy one get one free on all drinks before 9pm. Just as well too; they may help one to ignore a bad lingering smell of oil.

Clockwork is located at 3F, 82 Shanghai Lu, above Pissa and opposite Three Monkeys. Tel: 13913808995.
