Last week, students at Nanjing Normal University received notice that students without an attendance record of 70 percent for the semester will not have their visas renewed.

English as a second language institutions in Australia as well as universities all have an obligation to the government to keep strict control on their international students. Brazilian, Japanese and Korean students flock to the Gold Coast and spend their time drinking and frolicking about in the sea. However, if attendance levels are not up to scratch they are shipped back to from where they came.

Not known for its party scene but for its dedication to academia, Nanjing has long attracted only serious international learners. However, with the emergence of China’s low living costs and high wages, a rise in “temporary language learners” has spiked in recent years.

This and many other problems that come with housing an international community of youths, has caused the government to fall in line with countries such as Australia and adopt harsher rules.

International students in some of Nanjing’s and even China’s most prestigious universities must now adhere to a strict attendance record, achieve good grades and turn in an all-round high performance or risk losing their spot and being asked to leave.
