Nanjing police have finally solved a long-term investigation involving gangs that was being carried out in the new Jiangbei New Area.

Modern Express News was informed by the Nanjing Public Security Bureau Criminal Detachment that 20 members of a gang under suspicion were arrested on 23 January.

Initial investigations into the gang began in July of 2017, when a KTV operator in Jiangbei was repeatedly threatened. After becoming violent, the gang made off with a total of ¥200,000. This alarm was what tipped off police and over time, investigators came to understand the group’s organisational structure, including who was in charge, who were the messengers and what the groups intentions were.

On 17 December last year, police sent out more than 260 officers in the area, who later arrested of 30 criminal suspects, seized four firearms, 153 rounds of ammunition, 8 knives and over 20 grams of crystal methamphetamine (ice).

After the arrests, it was revealed the gang had opened and been running a casino, using high interest lending, extortion and other criminal means to extract money.

After the trial, it was revealed the members of the gang had used the means of violence or soft violence in the Jiangbei New Area and other areas in an organised manner, during a scramble for the right to operate and manage a KTV, gain a supply of raw materials to decorate residential quarters and haul construction waste. In addition, the group had created casinos, performed debt collection and other criminal activities that amounted to an illegal profit of more than ¥200 million.

Nanjing police have commented that since the launch of the “Winter Offensive” in November of last year, they have been working closely to uphold the principle of “playing early, playing small and outcropping”, saying that “Striking at high levels of crime and criminals, has achieved remarkable results”.

This kind of crime is a “malignant tumour” seriously endangering public security. Nanjing police added it will insistently crack down on such crimes and encourage citizens to promptly report any wrongdoings to the authorities.
