Nanjing will be playing host to the first ever Volleyball Women’s Nations League Finals starting Wednesday, 27 June, as inaugural championship for the Volleyball Nations League.

Teams from Brazil and the United States are highly favoured to win, as the two have held a monopoly over the Volleyball Grand Prix trophy over the last decade. However, Serbia, Turkey, the Netherlands and China are all still considered competitive. The Chinese team’s performance looks to be stronger than its ever been this year, making fans all the more excited.

This is far from the first time that Nanjing has hosted major sporting events. The city presented the 2005 National Games of China, the 2014 Youth Olympic Games and the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix Final in August 2017. It was the successful handling of the latter that secured the Nanjing bid in February to host the World Women’s Volleyball League for 3 consecutive years, beginning with the 2018 finals.

According to the International Volleyball Federation President, Ary Garca, the enthusiasm of Nanjing’s sporting fans was a key factor in the city being selected by the committee. “The Volleyball Nations League is committed to bringing the sport closer to the fans, and spectators in China never fail to create a fantastic atmosphere,” President Ary Graça said. “This brand new event will be a benchmark for sporting innovation and fan entertainment, and I am excited to witness this wonderful competition in action.”

In other sports, the last few years have seen Nanjing successfully hold the Roller Speed Skating World Championships, the Nanjing Marathon, the Nanjing International Youth Sports Culture Week and the Olympic Museums Network General Assembly. Nanjing was also awarded the title of “Capital of Roller Sports” by the International Roller Skating Federation and was host to the annual Roller Games Skating Championships in 2017. Going forward, the city shall be host to the 2018 World Badminton Championships between 30 July and 5 August, and the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup (Nanjing leg).

The Volleyball Women’s Nations League Finals will take place at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre from 27 June to 1 July, 2018. Tickets for the event can be purchased online and prices start at ¥50, with luxury box seats available for ¥380.

Just a few days later, the men’s event shall be held in Lille, France, with the finals taking place on 8 July.
