Wuhan is back in the international headlines, but this time for an altogether more positive reason. That would be the City’s Metro Line 12 that is set to become the world’s longest orbital mass transit route. And that’s on account of Wuhan’s size that is a product of its history.

This first phase of Line 12 forms the southern part of the orbital, running between Gangduhuayuan and Moshuihu Park. The fully automated GoA4 trains take 58 minutes to complete a journey between the two.

According to Railway Gazette, Line 12 is a core component of the “ring + radial” metro concept that is being rolled out in Wuhan, with its second phase to be 24.6 kilometres long and promising an additional 14 stations.

The opening of the first phase of Line 12 takes the total length of the Wuhan metro network to 553 kilometres, with 335 stations.

Orbital metro lines are of course nothing new. London’s Tube system has the Circle line (27km) and Shanghai its Line 14 (37km). Wuhan’s Line 12 puts both to shame, thanks to Wuhan being an amalgamation of three historic towns; Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang; Wuhan has a deep historical significance in China.
