For the “inliners” amongst us, the arrival in Nanjing, an entirely unfamiliar turf, brings with it the big question; where to skate?

With the madness that is the Chinese driving style and “bikeways” that are stuffed to the brim with beeping e-bikes, skating in the inner city does not seem preferable. Add to that the fact that many of the streets are filled with pot holes that could knock a horse off its feet, you probably will not choose to strap on your eight wheels downtown unless you have an unrelenting death wish.

Luckily, we have the Youth Olympics to thank for a new stretch of beautiful landscaping beside the river, which is ideal for a relaxing skate in the park. Simply walk out of the Lüboyuan Metro station, and into the Nanjing China Virescence Expo Garden, the temporary headquarters of the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (NYOGOC). Also known as Binjiang Park, this “greenway” runs along the shores of theYangtze River, offering fantastic views of the river island Jiangxinzhou, and providing a vast array of activities for young and old; first bouldering experiences and plenty of playground installations for your little ones, a military tank to explore for the “big boys” and the incredibly beautiful “flower sea” in the centre which had already become a favourite locale for wedding pictures, even when that section of the park was not actually officially open yet.

For inliners, stay on the red synthetic road, which allows for an incredibly smooth skate especially with the fantastic weather I was blessed with on the day of my trip. Since the area around the park has also been very recently constructed or renovated the streets are generously designed and pot-hole less to allow for some fun city skating once you have had enough of the greens.
