Using Alipay for Nanjing Buses and Metro

Say goodbye to loose change or that increasingly worn smart card when riding Nanjing’s bus or metro network, by discovering the convenience of Alipay’s ‘Transport’ option. Herein, a step-by-step guide.

The process is simple but you will need to have uploaded your passport information to your Alipay account.

Step 1

Click on the plus sign on the right hand corner of your Alipay home page. Select “Transport Code”. If your Alipay is not showing Transport Code already, then follow the additional guide here

Alternatively, Click ‘Pay Vendors’ as you usually would to pay for something. Select “Transport Code” at the bottom of the page.

Step 2

Here you will find both options for Bus and Metro. Click on whichever you wish to connect to. Nanjing should automatically be selected.

Step 3

Click and agree to terms and conditions then click on the blue button at the bottom. You should then need to follow one more step until you will be asked to enter your Alipay password or scan your finger print, whichever you usually use for Alipay.

Step 4

The same will apply for the metro option. Click on Agree to Terms and Conditions and click enter. Follow the steps and enter your password.

Once you’re all set up, when you click on the plus sign again one of your QR codes (either for bus or metro) will appear. You can then click on the button below to switch between the two.

When you ride the bus simply point this QR code to the scanning device nearby the driver when you get on.

When using Alipay for the metro look for the ‘Mobile Payment Channel’ and scan the orange machine to your right on your way into and out of the metro, as you would using your card.

Bonus Feature

Additionally, when waiting for the bus you can select a “Real time guide” that will advise which buses are best to take from your position to your destination and also how long it will be until your bus arrives and how long it will take you to walk from your position to the bus stop nearest you.
