Nanjing-based expat charity Hopeful Hearts yesterday launched the much-awaited second edition of its ever-popular cook book to great acclaim, in the process giving a shot in the arm to its efforts in providing vital life-saving heart surgery to local children.

Over seven years ago, the first Hopeful Hearts cook book was created with recipes submitted/donated by people within the expat community. These recipes were then printed in one book in both English and Chinese, with the overall concept being that it appealed to various cultures and also, for those in the expat community, it was possible to use this cook book with an ayi.

As it has become rather iconic for Hopeful Hearts in Nanjing, Hopeful Hearts decided in 2014 to start working on a new cook book. Unlike the first, this book would include recipes created with mostly locally sourced ingredients (not taking into account standard larder ingredients such as butter). As before, all recipes have been donated to Hopeful Hearts thus it is a rather multi-cultural collection of dishes.

Throughout October and November 2014, Hopeful Hearts ran the “Art for Heart” competition at the British School of Nanjing, Nanjing International School and EtonHouse in which students submitted entries for the front cover design of the new cook book. Overall, Hopeful Hearts have nine pieces of artwork which have been included in the cook book and several that have been used in the new launch poster.

Hopeful Hearts have been very fortunate to have two generous sponsors, Skyland Real Estate and Simcare, who have paid all costs associated with the book. This therefore means that every single penny made from sales will go directly to Hopeful Hearts and the next child’s surgery. The new book is on sale now for ¥100 RMB. Away from Nanjing, the cook book can also be found in Chengdu, Guangzhou and Nanchang.
