Half a million votes were cast in Nanjing’s recent international photography competition, and with the epidemic once again under control, so the time had come to recognise the winners with their certificates and a host of valuable, high-tech prizes.

Yesterday, 3 July, saw the award ceremony for the “A Decade of Nanjing” competition take place in the Nanjing D9 Block, close to 1912 in Xuanwu District.

In addition to the winners and their family members, officials in attendance included Zhang Bin, Deputy Director of the Nanjing Foreign Affairs Office; and Chen Keke, Executive Deputy Mayor of Xuanwu District.

After speeches from both, the ceremony got underway, with winners placed sixth thru 20th in the online voting receiving their certificates, together with Xiaomi powerbanks.

A total of 557,258 votes were cast by members of the public in the competition’s online-voting stage, after an expert panel selected 32 finalists from entries submitted during March.

Their brief had been to select the best photographs that represent the changes which have taken place in Nanjing over the past 10 years, while reflecting the city’s economic and social development.

Part of the considerable interest in the competition and the intense voting in its closing stages was of course the desirable roster of high-tech prizes up for grabs; smartwatches, tablets and mobile phones.

It was in fact a Huawei Fit wearable which was awarded to the fifth place winner yesterday. High-school student, Carina Chen, took home the smartwatch, together with her certificate, having gathered 22,473 online votes.

Coming all the way from Suzhou for the ceremony was David Alexander, who previously lived in Nanjing, with 30,555 votes. David’s fourth-place prize was a Huawei GT3 smartwatch.

Cosette Danielle Greeno, an American, was third place winner, amassing 76,423 votes. Cosette, a high-school teacher in Nanjing, received a Huawei MatePad 11, as well as her certificate.

In second place, with a very impressive 134,241 votes, was Muhammad Tahir. Hailing from Pakistan, Muhammad won an enviable Huawei P50 smartphone.

And the overall winner of the “A Decade of Nanjing” international photography competition was Matthew Shepard, a Brit who amassed a staggering 200,981 votes to take the first-place prize that was an Apple iPhone 13.

Matthew, who is Principal at The British School of Nanjing, also made an acceptance speech at the close of yesterday’s ceremony. “The one constant throughout has been the people. Nanjing has changed, beyond belief, but the people haven’t. There’s perhaps a little less curiosity now than there was, but there still remains a warmth and a welcome that has made Nanjing my home”, he said.

As for his winning photograph, Matthew said, “I’m not in any way a professional photographer. I’m not even a good amateur photographer; it was just one of those ‘lucky snaps’ that captured a moment”.
