Singapore based Scoot is celebrating its 1st anniversary with the launch of a new service from Nanjing to Singapore that debuts on 3rd June, 2013. With the Scoot website offering promotional prices as low as ¥670, industry analysts continue to question the long term viability of aviation’s new “low cost long haul” model.

The first anniversary of operations for Scoot falls on 4th June, a year that has seen the long-haul Low Cost Carrier (LCC) bring its number of routes to 11, four of which are to cities on the Chinese mainland.

As a part of the Singapore International Airlines group, Scoot operates a non-competitive strategy with its partner brands (that also include Silk Air) whereby destinations are chosen for which demand is lacking for a full fare service offered by Singapore Airlines. The flagship carrier of the group cancelled its service from Nanjing to Singapore in March, 2010 due to insufficient demand. Now, the group hopes that with its low prices Scoot shall lure China’s emerging middle classes back toward the Straits. For many such potential passengers Singapore represents a perfect choice of destination for their first travel abroad, with Chinese as a strong part of Singaporean Culture (Mandarin is an official language). As such Scoot is better positioned than SIA and SilkAir to tap into this sector of the market.

Speaking with Richard Quest for CNN, Scoot CEO Campbell Wilson said, “In eight years in Singapore, [LCCs have] gone from nothing to about 25% of Changi’s (Airport) throughput. There’s a market that wants to travel no frills and wants to travel further afield.”

To date, at only 5 percent, LCCs have a very small share of total seat capacity in the Chinese market. At Nanjing this share is even lower, at 3 percent, accounted for by the sporadic presence of three Chinese LCCs; China West Air, Lucky Air and Spring Airlines. Scoot will be the first international Low Cost Carrier to be represented at Nanjing.

Scoot will fly Nanjing to Singapore on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays with its TZ081 service departing at 1700, while the outward leg leaves Singapore at 1045 on the same days. Tickets can be purchased online via the Scoot website; www.flyscoot.com.
