Some might see it as the beginning of the end. In a good way. After putting close on one million injections into people’s upper arms, one of the 10 mass vaccination centres based in sports stadiums in Jiangsu Province is set to put the needles away for good.

China began its COVID vaccination program in March of last year. And on 5 April, 2021, so too did Wutaishan Sports Centre in Nanjing begin its new role as a mass vaccination site.

That all comes to an end next week, as the place where one in 10 Nanjingers got their shots will officially change purpose on 10 June, meaning Wutaishan will soon reprise its role as a centre of sport and fitness.

According to Hua Yang, Head of Wutaishan Sports Centre, after a thorough disinfecting, the first sport to be played again in Wutaishan will be basketball from 14 June. Many individuals and enterprises have already been booking up slots, reports the Yangtze Evening News.

The main arena shall also be remodelled to match its layout for the last CBA game played there, in something of a treat for basketball enthusiasts.

However, the Centre’s healthcare capability shall remain. Afterall, stadiums play many roles in cities today, not least as emergency shelters.

In October 2020, the General Office of the State Council issued the “Opinions on Strengthening the Construction of National Fitness Venue Facilities and Developing Mass Sports”. Said Opinions require the promotion of dual-use public stadiums. “Dual use”, in this instance refers to peacetime and wartime.

But as we’ve discovered in the past 2+ years, war does not necessarily mean armed conflict.

In particular, and as a result thereof, large-scale sporting arenas in China have since been busy strengthening their functions as to major epidemic prevention and control, as well as risk and disaster avoidance.

When all is said and done, the Wutaishan vaccination site, Nanjing’s largest, will have administered in excess of 920,000 vaccines, over 2,100 per day since its opening. It will have been one of 10 sporting venues in Jiangsu to have between them set up 30 centralised vaccination sites.
