Just as Jiangsu province slams the breaks on its official environmental testing agencies, college students have stepped up and begun testing the environment themselves.
Nanjing University students, from the Green Wild Environmental Protection Association, have taken part in various activities to promote the “Spirit of the Jinling Ecology” project.
Focusing mainly on abandoned mines and exposed mining areas, the students carried out a series of activities centred around ecological protection, according to the Yangtze Evening Post.
Students took part in a survival challenge, while camping in the countryside, in addition to their scientific research, the idea behind the excursion being to educate citizens on how to cultivate a better environment by getting back to nature.
Students carried out water-quality testing, dust-pollution monitoring, pollution detection, vegetation destruction and noise detection. After analysing their findings, the students drew up environmental testing reports.
From a sociological viewpoint, students also spoke with residents of surrounding residential areas, discussing how environmental changes impacts them.
