On 31 July, 2018, after audience members complained to police about a female online game anchor, the lady in question received a public reprimand on Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, for references and recordings she made about the Nanjing Massacre 3 years ago.

Remaining a hot topic on Weibo, those watching Chen Yifa’s live broadcast became offended when they realised that she “was still in the game” even after having made such “laissez-faire” remarks about Nanjing’s history multiple times in the past. Gamers became so upset that reporting her to the authorities and a stern telling-off seemed justice.

Chen works for the website Betta and has relayed that after joking her character in the game was “visiting the Yasukini Shrine”, audience members were said to have become enraged and told police she had “publicly recorded the tragic memory of the Nanjing Massacre and the fall of the three provinces as a teasing joke early on [in 2016] in her broadcast”.

The outcry has come at a sensitive time; last December marked 80 years since the Nanjing Massacre.

After having been informed of the young woman’s remarks, the Jiangsu Network Police Department came down hard on Ms Chen with a finger-wagging Weibo post that announced, “The network anchor should lead by example… Do not challenge the moral bottom line and cross the legal red line”, originally reported Sina News.

Not long after the police publicly reprimanded Ms Chen, she published an apology on her personal Weibo account, that stated, “I apologise to the public for making false statements about historical events in a video in 2016, and also apologise for the cynical comments made on Weibo during 2010-2011. I also voluntarily accept revolutionary education and self improvement”.

The incident is not unlike many others in China, except for the way in which it was handled. A greater transparency in the handing down of rules and reprimands in China is becoming apparent.
