Nanjing Municipal Commission of Agriculture and School of Life Sciences of Nanjing Normal University launched a joint scientific study on the Yangtze finless porpoise on April 12.

The investigation will last for up to two years, which will be the longest and most comprehensive regional scientific investigation of such kind in the Nanjing section of the Yangtze River. The information obtained will serve as a reference and aims to help protect the finless porpoise by determining effective protection and management measures.

Nanjing is the only city along the Yangtze River where the finless porpoise can be observed in the downtown area, according to Yangguang, dean of the School of Life Sciences of Nanjing Normal University. It is estimated that there are about 40 finless porpoises left in the Nanjing section of the Yangtze River. But to get the exact figure, a scientific investigation is needed.
