5 Dead, 15 Missing; Yunnan Floods Impact 2,000 People

Five people have been killed and 15 reported missing, while 2,000 people have been affected as severe flooding continues to devastate parts of Yunnan. The country has issued a National Level IV Disaster Emergency Response for the province.

Severe flooding and landslides has seriously impacted Mengmao Yao Township, Malipo County, Wenshan Zhuang and the Miao Autonomous Prefecture, according to the Yunnan Provincial Civil Affairs Department.

Working groups were, on 2 September, sent to the Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, the hardest-hit areas, to check the disaster situation, and to guide and assist the local government in rescue and disaster relief.

The Yunnan Provincial Disaster Reduction Committee Office and the Provincial Civil Affairs Department have launched a Class III disaster response emergency response. According to Xinhuanet, Wenshan Prefecture has urgently been allocated tents, clothes, rice, oil and other relief supplies.
