Earlier this week marked the third Chinese People’s Police Day, with law enforcement authorities putting on a host of displays and ceremonies across the nation, ranging from hoisting the nation’s flag to educating young children as to the nature of police work.

On the day itself, this Tuesday, 10 January, in Nanjing’s Jiangbei New Area, a public information activity was held outside the Red Sun Plaza on Daqiao Bei Lu.

There, stars of the show were the police SWAT team in full uniform, of course, with their accompanying armaments, together with a host of advanced equipment, including a bomb disposal robot.

And a robot police dog. As a video released by Jiangbei New Area shows, hoards of children gathered around law enforcement’s robotic best friend, while its out-of-date organic cousin sadly found only one young admirer.

Across town, Nanjing South Railway Station police had set up an exhibition in the Station’s north plaza, which included a display of equipment and an actual combat demonstration, together with safety publicity and an interactive experience for visitors. The exhibition was kicked off only after squad members had sang the police anthem and solemnly swore to the police flag.

“I just watched the police’s solemn ceremony and feel they are very dignified. … I hope that more such activities will be held in the future to let the public know more about public security work and lend their support”, said a Ms. Zhang, a passenger visiting Nanjing from Chuzhou in Anhui Province.

Further afield across Jiangsu Province, police in Huai’an City returned stolen property to its rightful owners. These included automobiles, motorcycles, electric bikes and even ¥100,000 in cash, as Our Jiangsu reports.

In China as a whole, it was revealed at a press conference held Tuesday by China’s Ministry of Public Security that a total of 308 police officers and 179 auxiliary officers had died in the line of duty during 2022.

Li Bei, spokesperson for the Ministry, went on to say that an additional 4,334 police officers and 3,470 auxiliary officers were injured during the year, as CGTN has reported.

It was also noted that the number of violent terrorist incidents occurring in China has remained zero for six consecutive years.
