That Yuhua Tea is one of many exotic flavours available evidences this is a Nanjing company. Nothing remarkable about that but for the fact this is genuine Italian gelato.

Welcome to Amici Gelato (Ice Cream Friends, est. 2024, Nanjing), the new and most handy way for students and faculty at The British School of Nanjing in Jiangning District right down the road to put on some pounds.

But devotees of the vanilla and strawberry mainstays of the ice cream world are going to be disappointed. Herein, nothing but exotica. Standout for The Nanjinger has to be Sicilian Pistachio, but each to their own, with the other flavours available being, at time of writing, Thai rice, Earl Black Tea (Earl Grey incorrectly translated?), Thai milk, mint Chocolate, pandan coconut, mango and forest berries.

Become a good customer (The Nanjinger has quickly become a very good customer indeed) and one can even be permitted to step behind the counter to don a pair of gloves and get into the scooping business.

A store display highlights the differences between Italian ice cream and the American variety; the former usually hand made, the latter industrialised; “In general, Italian ice cream emphasises the fresh and pure taste of the ingredients” being one claim, and, “The taste of Italian ice cream is more delicate, refreshing, and not too sweet and greasy” another.

They are facts not lost on anyone making a purchase, making a good proportion of them go on to avail themselves of a VIP card. It’s all money well spent.

Amici Gelato is located at 108 Tuolejia, 9 Jiangjun Avenue 江宁区将军大道9号托乐嘉花园108幢, 100 metres north of its intersection with Shengtai Xi Lu and Cuiping Shan Metro Station’s exit 3. Tel 18118800357. Moving to beside Laomendong in November.
