Wallace Burger & Chicken was No. 2 on a China Daily Top 10 fast-food list a decade ago. And so now also to be found in every last nook and cranny in Nanjing.
Popular, yes, but no plain sailing. Frequently criticised for food safety, expired ingredients, reused oil and fake health certificates, Wallace issued public apologies following multiple scandals, closed problematic stores and pledged stricter inspections.

With such a reputation, The Nanjinger felt it should sacrifice itself for the sake of our readers and their curiosity. So let’s keep this as brief as possible.
What of this controversial, budget fast food? A quick previous visit had left us in no doubt that Wallace’s French fries are deplorable; this time around, however, our entire “set” was really quite respectable.
For just ¥22, that comprised a chicken burger, a truly gigantic breadcrumbed chicken leg and about five chicken nuggets. Best of all though, little in the way of that loathsome post fast-food aftertaste. And it wasn’t fast either; it was instant.

So if you are in a fix, but you need a fix, Wallace will fill that need, at half the price of KFC et al. Just be sceptical of online reviews.
Wallace Burger & Chicken (华莱士) have outlets all over Nanjing. There is probably one near you; just look in every last nook and cranny.
