Canadian Governor General delivers speech at NJU

David Johnston, governor general of Canada, was invited to attend the “Forum on study and innovation” held by Nanjing University (NJU), delivered a speech themed “Knowledge diplomacy” and carried out interactive exchanges with Chinese and Canadian scholars and students from NJU on Oct 21.

72-year-old David Johnston, who also has a Chinese name “Jiangshan”, is a famous educator and jurist in Canada and was once president of McGill University and University of Waterloo (UW) in Canada. He took the post as the 28th governor general of Canada since Oct 1, 2010.

Ontario in Canada, home province of David Johnston, is the friendly province of Jiangsu province in China. Considerable developments have been made in economic and trade cooperation and exchanges in the fields of science education and culture between the two provinces as well as in consolidation of the relationships among friendly cities between the two provinces since establishment of the friendly relations between the two provinces in 1985.

David Johnston has established relations with NJU for a long time. He once positively pushed forward academic exchanges and cooperation in various forms with NJU when taking the post as president of UW, which resulted in the establishment of Sino-Canadian College and Confucius Institute through the cooperation between NJU and UW. In addition, David Johnston was also granted the honorary doctorate by NJU in 2012.

David Johnston expressed that more Chinese students are hoped to study in Canada and on the contrary, more Canadian students are encouraged to study in China.
