Wenzhou is one of Zhejiang’s best-known cities, but it is not famous by accident. It has long been a place of family firms, overseas links, hard-edged manufacturing and a coastline that has pushed the city outward rather than inward.
温州是浙江省最知名的城市之一，但它的名气并非偶然。这里长期以家族企业、海外联系、硬核制造业和向外延展的海岸线而著称，城市的发展始终带着一种向外生长的劲头。
The map helps explain the mood. Wenzhou sits in south-eastern Zhejiang on China’s coast, with mountains inland, islands offshore and a city built around the Ou River. It is a place where geography has never left business alone for long.

By late 2025, Wenzhou had 1.564 million registered private enterprises and individual businesses, while private firms accounted for 90.8 percent of the added value of above-scale industry. Wenzhou’s industrial identity was built on small workshops that grew into national brands. Electrical equipment, shoes, garments, pumps, valves, auto parts and related supply chains still matter; so do newer sectors such as network economy, laser and optoelectronics, rail transit and artificial intelligence. The city has also set up a provincial-level artificial intelligence bureau, which tells you how seriously it is treating the next round of industrial change.

But Wenzhou is not only about factories and balance sheets. It is also one of China’s most important qiaoxiang, or overseas Chinese hometowns. Chinese-language reference material says more than 2 million Wenzhou people live across the world, including over 800,000 overseas, with more than 200 overseas chambers of commerce and more than 300 social organisations helping to keep the links warm.

Wenzhou’s outward reach has economic value. It gives the city capital, contacts and access to markets far beyond Zhejiang. It also helps explain why Wenzhou business culture is so networked and family-based; trust often matters as much as paperwork.

Mountains, Sea and the Business of Getting Around

For visitors, the best-known natural name remains Yandang Mountain. Chinese-language reference material describes it as a world geopark and a national 5A scenic area, formed by ancient volcanic activity. The Yandang scenic zone covers about 450 square kilometres and is divided into nine areas with more than 380 sights. Lingfeng, Lingyan and Dalongqiu are the famous trio.

Nanxi River gives the city another face. It runs for 139.8 kilometres through Yongjia County, with a basin of 2,420 square kilometres, and it is known for clear water, old villages and the kind of riverside landscape that has kept local heritage unusually intact.

That heritage is not museum-only. Along the Nanxi River, older village patterns, ancestral halls and traditional settlement forms still shape daily life, while the river itself has stayed useful rather than decorative. In Wenzhou, landscape and livelihood have rarely been strangers.

Wenzhou Longwan International Airport is about 21 kilometres from the city centre, Wenzhou South railway station sits about 13.5 kilometres from downtown and the S1 and S2 rail lines connect the airport, the South Station and the urban core. The new Hangzhou-Wenzhou high-speed railway, opened in 2024, means the fastest services from Hangzhou West to Wenzhou North take about 1 hour 27 minutes.
温州在交通上也很务实。温州龙湾国际机场距离市中心约21公里，温州南站距市中心约13.5公里，S1和S2两条市域铁路把机场、温州南站和市区核心连接起来。2024年开通的杭温高铁，则让杭州西到温州北的最快列车运行时间缩短到约1小时27分。
