Foreign supermarkets in Nanjing were in the past aplenty, but international acquisitions and the shift to online/delivery curtailed their presence heavily. Yet, chances are that, wherever you live in Nanjing, you are but a short taxi ride from a supermarket that stocks foreign groceries and goodies.

The American heavyweight which sells just about everything, as well as a selection of produce by their in-house brand, Kirkland. Just make some freezer space, and prepare for a long journey, hoards of shoppers and buying in bulk. The required membership can be purchased on site. A self-operated petrol station with the lowest prices in Nanjing is also on site.

Originally a B2B operation in which private individuals can now shop that carries a wide selection of foreign foods plus wines, beers and sprits. App required for self check out; a painful process but staff are willing to help.

Chinese Supermarkets with Imported Goods in Nanjing
City’super 超生活
Looking for flaxseed oil? Perhaps not but indicative of the variety herein. The city’s biggest selection of cheese, organic eggs, every form of imported pasta (whole wheat and gluten free) and more imported goodies than you can point a stick at. Just don’t expect any bargains.

Hema 盒马
Not to be confused with the Dutch brand of the same name. The Alibaba-owned chain which goes under the English name, “Fresh Hippo”, operates in excess of 20 locations in Nanjing offering a huge selection of imported goods, including beef steak likely Nanjing’s best, outside of any restaurant (and good value at around ¥30). Only downfalls are their app is absolutely required, self check out is the only option and the Hippo’s bread is deplorable. Steer clear at peak times, especially from the in-store dining areas. The upside is staff are more than happy to sell a VIP membership (¥200 at time of writing) for 20 percent discount on all future purchases (which can all be done online for home delivery, within 30 minutes in a less-than-3-kilometre radius) and some free on-the-spot goodies.
Suguo 苏果
As the Nanjing retailer that comes in many forms, the bigger Suguo shops invariably have an imported-goods section. There are even a number of product lines by giant UK retailer, Tesco. Find out more in our “Suguo for Dummies” guide via this link.
BHG Marketplace
BHG stands for Beijing Hualian Group, while Hualian is a nationwide chain of mini marts. Features a very large stock of imported goods plus fresh organic fruit and veg plus passable sliced bread. Many items are pricey, but that keeps the crowds away. Not to be confused with BHG Lifestyle, an altogether more Chinese experience (but same logo) with a very limited selection of imported goods.

RT Mart 大润发/金润发
Taiwan-based supermarket which for many years worked closely with French hypermarché brand Auchan, until eventually fully acquiring all of the latter’s stores in China in 2021. Expect a decent imported-food section, fresh meat of fair quality, dairy (butter and cheese), bakery items and snacks galore. Self check out is a breeze.
