Shanghai, the bustling metropolis of China, is not only famous for its skyscrapers, historic neighbourhoods, and arts and culture, but also as a hub for vintage fashion. From high-end designer boutiques to thrift stores, Shanghai has something for every vintage lover, offering a unique-shopping experience that transports one to a different era altogether.

As one of the most popular streets in Shanghai, Yongkang Lu is known for its vintage stores that showcase a uniquely-Japanese style. One standout along this street is Swing Vintage, which has captured the hearts of Harajuku, street-style millennials and Gen Z with its wooden shopping experience and individualistic clothing.

Upon entering Swing Vintage, customers are immediately met with a warm and inviting small interior. The clothes are just as unique as the store’s layout, with leopard prints, furs, prints and florals filling the space. It’s no wonder that passersby can’t help but be drawn in, to be consumed by a delightful shopping experience.

Updates come fast, catering to the ever-changing tastes of the Swing Vintage clientele. However, this means you must act quickly when something catches your eye, or you’ll miss out. Even famous, online personalities and celebrities are loyal patrons, showcasing the shop’s popularity.

However, if you want to ditch the froufrou, then on your radar should be Naughty Vintage, turning heads since it first opened its doors. A popular destination for vintage aficionados, aside from the troublesome location (located within a labyrinth of a compound), the store boasts an impressive collection of vintage clothing and accessories, spanning decades and styles.

The racks are filled with lots of rare finds, including 2000s Letterman and Tommy Hilfiger jackets; a treat for coat lovers! With old-school flair oozing from the jackets a sight commanding to be seen, one will also find a treasure trove of racer jackets waiting to be discovered.

And be pleasantly surprised by finding a plethora of new 1990s Nike and Adidas nylon sweaters. The styles in the store are truly diverse with something for everyone; whether you prefer corduroy or sports jerseys, you are sure to find a piece that catches your eye.

Lastly, there is Déjà Vu, tackling sustainability head on by offering a unique and eco-friendly shopping experience, in an atmosphere that feels like one has stepped back in time. With a wide selection of affordable and high-quality books on the second floor and an extensive collection of recycled clothes on the third, Déjà Vu is a vintage haven that has gained quite a reputation among locals and visitors.

Book lovers will be spoilt for choice, with a diverse range available catering to all interests. From classical literature to Murakami and even “Chronicles: Volume One” by Bob Dylan all going for around about ¥70 per book, out of all the vintage stores in Shanghai, Déjà Vu has one often the most impressive collection of English books I’ve seen.

Up another floor, one will find a wide variety of recycled, brand-name clothes that are practically brand new. The downside is that prices are a little high for the average high-school student.

Catering to the growing trend of sustainable shopping, Déjà Vu provides customers with an eco-friendly way to spend their money. With every item purchased from the store removing the need to buy new clothes, so too does it reduce the carbon emissions that come from manufacturing and distributing new clothing. This commitment to eco friendliness is a standout feature of the store, making it a popular destination for environmentally-conscious consumers.

Déjà Vu also understands the importance of transparency when it comes to the clothes they sell. Visitors can scan the tags on clothes for descriptions of items, together with their original brand and price. This feature is beneficial in making an informed decision, giving customers peace of mind when purchasing.

All three of these stores are conveniently located within a 10-minute bike ride from each other, making it easy to see everything this trendy area that is Shanghai’s former French Concession has to offer. Whether you’re in the mood for dim sum, gelato or vintage finds, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon exploring.
