Eight underground shelters will be open to the public for free to escape the scorching summer heat from July 1st, 2013, said Civil Air Defense Office of Nanjing on June 18.
With a sudden rise in temperature, many citizens are expecting the opening of nearby air-raid shelters. Relevant departments are making preparations for the eight shelters to make sure the ventilation ducts, fire fighting apparatus and security system are in good condition.
“Free drinking water is available in all the 111 underground shelters in Chongqing, some even equipped with free newspapers and TV services. We really hope Nanjing could do the same this year,” said a resident.
A staff with the Civil Air Defense Office said they are thinking about offering free water and newspapers at some shelters.
