Woman sentenced to ‘visit mother regularly’

A case concerning the support of aged parent was on trail at People’s Court of Beitang District, Wuxi on July 1. And the result of the trial is that the two defendants – a woman and her husband should, from the day when the court decision comes into force, visit the plaintiff, namely, the woman’s mother, at least every two months. And during the Dragon Boat Festival, Double Ninth Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day and New Year’s Day, they should manage to visit the mother in at least two of those holidays. During the period between New Year’s Eve and the Lantern Festival, they should visit the mother for at least one time.

This is the first similar case in the nation after the enforcement of the newly-amended Law on the Protection of the Elderly’s Rights and Interests of the People’s Republic of China, which stipulates that adults should care for their parents’ “spiritual needs” and “never neglect or snub elderly people”.

It is heard that the plaintiff surnamed Chu is 77 years old, and the two accused are her daughter and son-in-law. According to an agreement previously reached between them, Chu’s daughter and son-in-law should support and take care of Chu. But after years of living together, Chu had problems with her daughter’s family and as a result, she moved to her son’s house to live. But angry over her indifferent daughter who never paid a visit to her after her moving out, Chu filed a lawsuit against her daughter and son-in-law.
