Nanjing to build metasequoia avenue in style of the Republic of China

Nanjing will initiate a one-year-long restoration project of North Taiping Road in the wake of a subway construction project, after which, citizens will see a brand new North Taiping Road featuring beautiful eco-environment and landscapes in style of the Republic of China (1912-1949), said Nanjing Bureau of Landscape at a news briefing on Oct 10.

According to the preliminary plan, the restoration project will span from East Zhongshan Road in the south to East Beijing Road in the north with a full length of 1.88 km. The project will underline landscapes and cultural features of North Taiping Road while building a “Metasequoia Avenue” full of cultural elements of the Republic of China.

According to Zhu Haiqi, deputy director of the Urban Greening Management Office of the Nanjing Bureau of Landscape, there are currently 10 oriental planes, 395 metasequoia trees and hickory trees in North Taiping Road, the population of which will be increased, especially metasequoia trees. “The average trunk diameter of metasequoia trees in the North Taiping Road is 35 cm at now, and the project will plant metasequoia tress in larger diameter while ensuring the survival rate.” The “Metasequoia Avenue” will also be accompanied with infrastructures such as statues and corridors in style of the Republic of China.
