Nanjing Asian Youth Games (AYG) entered its fifth day on Aug 21, with 27 gold medals of 7 categories of competition being awarded in total. China won 8 gold medals, 6 silvers and 9 bronzes.
Fu Yu, a 16-year old Chinese taekwondo player, battled her way through the competition, outplayed Thailand’s finalist and won the gold medal.
As for badminton, China’s Lin Guipu won the championship after defeating Li Zhuoyao, a young athlete from Hong Kong, 2-0.
In the weight lifting competition, Lu Xingyu, China’s young athlete secured a silver medal of men’s 77kg weight lifting with the final result of 285 kg. Qi Xia, the Chinese female Hercules lifted 202 kg over her head and won the gold medal of women’s 63kg weight lifting, while another young athlete, Yuan Yuting, took the bronze medal. In men’s 85kg weight lifting competition, China’s Pan Yongtao and Feng Lei ended with the gold and the silver medal for their extraordinary performance.
Zhang Jialang of Hong Kong defeated a Japanese opponent in the final of men’s foil, and won the gold medal.
Dong Yu from Lianyungang, China took the women’s shot put gold medal with the final result of 16.84 meters, which also broke her personal record.
China’s Ma Hu and Ainikeerjiang Ahmed competed against other athletes together in men’s 2,000m steeplechase event, and ranked first and second with 5 minutes 53’ seconds, and 6 minutes 0.31 seconds respectively.
It is also worth noting that the Yemeni athlete, Rageh Mohammed won the bronze medal for his country, which is also the first medal of Yemen since AYG kicked off.
Gao Zhilin of China won the second runner-up in men’s triple jump event. Another Chinese young athlete Hong Jingwen won the silver medal in women’s long jump.
To date, China stays at the top of the medal table with 77 medals in total, of which 36 golds, 20 silvers and 21 bronzes. South Korea ranks the second with 31 medals and Thailand replaces North Korea to become the third with 27 medals, while North Korea drops to the sixth.
