Migrant workers defrauded for highly-paid jobs overseas

A case involving overseas labor crimes was cracked by the economic crime division of Jiangsu Jintan police, said media on June 17.

In February, two suspects, surnamed Cai and Tang respectively, claimed that they could offer overseas jobs as entrusted by a labor agency in Jintan, and promised a monthly salary as high as 10,000 yuan (around $1,600).

Lured by the high pay, 89 people applied for the jobs in less than two days and every applicant paid 3,000 yuan ($480) as the deposit.

On May 5, the 89 workers were taken to the Inner Mongolia autonomous region where they were told to wait for a tour heading for Mongolia. However, Tang and Cai disappeared after lying that the exit procedures were delayed.

The workers had no other choices but to tramp the streets and didn’t return home until one month later when they reported the case to the police. After a preliminary investigation, the police have put Tang and Cai under criminal detention.
