Put on the brake before crosswalk

The authority of public transit of Nanjing announced on Sept 15 that it will launch a campaign dubbed as “Courtesy at Zebra Stripes”.

Rules have been set on how to “act courteously” — the driver has to loosen the accelerator and gear down 30 meters away when seeing anyone walking across the zebra stripes ahead, lower the speed to 15 km/h and put on the brake 20 meters away, and stop the bus in a distance of less than 10 meters.

The traffic authority of Nanjing will set up a supervision team to check all the buses of the city for “courteous driving”. Nanjing will also make efforts to involve taxies, official vehicles and private vehicles in the campaign.

Before Nanjing’s attempt to realize a civilized road, Hangzhou city launched “Courtesy at Zebra Stripes” in 2009, with its traffic fatalities down by 45 persons in 2010 and on the decrease ever since then.
