A mass grave of bicycles has been discovered in a suburb in downtown Nanjing to which no-one is owning up. Sure, the bike revolution has no doubt helped alleviate the streets of car congestion, while it has also, on the whole, ushered in a greener, fitter city centre.

That said, almost everyone is aware that the private bike share companies have seemed to overlook the mounting problem of where to put their two-wheeled products. The very problem that the shared bikes have helped solve, could in time lead to its demise.

When the bikes first hit the streets, somewhat predictably for China, they were dumped one on top of each other on sidewalks. As an answer to public barraging about the monstrosity that was the pavement pile up, companies sent out trucks during the dead of night to collect the bikes, service them and disperse them throughout the city.

However, despite their best efforts, streets continue to be plagued by the inconvenient and downright ugly piles of metal. In response to hundreds of illegally parked shared bicycles on Tiexinqiao Jie in Yuhuatai District, mystery men (or women) have removed them from the bridge and dumped them in a parking lot near Yinxi Lu, reports The Paper.

The bikes have since been covered in mounds of dirt, dumped on by unsuspecting lorries, buried under thick earth, which neither solves nor dissipates the problem. “We have already informed various brand companies to come in and get the bicycles”, Yinxi Community staff member Chen Tao said. He went on to mention companies indeed came to collect the “good” bikes, but discarded and left behind the “bad” bikes, leaving them to pile up in the parking lot.

Authorities in Nanjing are well accustomed to unearthing mass graves, of former dynastic emperors, for example. But bicycles they are not. Further efforts to alleviate the problem comes in the form of WeChat groups between authorities and the the bike sharing companies. This is to notify the companies immediately that bikes have been dumped; if companies do not respond within half an hour, the bikes will be removed.

Even with such latest efforts to clear the roads and the tips, it remains unlikely these private companies can at this point match European or even local government efforts at collective cleanliness.
