In China, the new school year comes with an exciting experience for university freshmen: compulsory military training.
Some female students were recently photographed practicing their military technique (with what appears to be a “hairpin”) in Nanjing.
The training, which typically lasts anywhere from a week to a month, is aimed at developing patriotism, team spirit and fitness. The experience is also a great way for Chinese students to mingle with their future classmates and establish friendships.
Military training has been compulsory for high school and university students ever since the practice’s origin in the 1950’s.
