Seemingly sinister goings on in which a suitcase containing a staggering amount of cash that was left unattended on the Nanjing Metro have come to an unbelievable conclusion in which the money was reunited with its owner.

The incident occurred on 24 November, but it has taken until now to be reported for security purposes and reasons of potential financial irregularities.

Think of it as you would a pair of gloves, a hat, at worse your phone. It was simply something you forgot to take as you got off the metro one morning.

Except this wasn’t a pair of gloves. It was ¥1.28 million in cash, left by its careless owner in a suitcase on a Nanjing Metro Line 1 train, reports The Paper.

When the train arrived at the Maigaoqiao terminus, while cleaning crews were getting quickly to work in time for the train’s turnaround, its driver discovered the unaccompanied bag.

This was around 16:00. The driver, Ni Yinhe, took the bag that had been left behind, a silver suitcase, and brought it to the relevant personnel in Maigaoqiao station.

There, its contents was discovered and the absent owner traced by referring to surveillance camera footage from the train and station.

Reunited with his stash, Bao said, “It was so emotionally moving to see that big pile of cash still intact”.

At this point we can only speculate as to why Bao was carrying such a large amount on his person in cash. Many would suspect the funds would have had the purpose of making an untraceable transaction, possibly with links to organised crime.

That the authorities have remained tight lipped about the incident until now suggests the period of silence to be that in which the relevant investigations were carried out in order to satisfy local financial regulators that the funds were indeed to be utilised for legitimate purposes.
