Deep into the evening of 24 August, a truck over loaded with cats crammed aboard trundled out of Nanjing city on the G4211 Ningma (Nanjing-Ma’anshan) Highway. Suspicious police pulled the truck over and detained the driver and cats. A QQ cat-loving group rushed down to the compound where the cats were being held in Jiangning in order to help.

QQ cat group member, Ms. Liu, who had trailed the truck loaded with so many cats on the highway until it reached the compound, felt sickened. One by one, other members of the group offered help, fearing kittens were amongst the load, famished and thirsty.

It is alleged the cat seller and the driver squashed hundreds of cats into cages and on to the vehicle. When questioned, the driver only commented that the cats were bound for Guangzhou. At midnight, the cats were taken by police and given to the Stone Buddha Temple.

The driver later confessed that the cats had been issued from Zhenjiang and were on their way to the south. The driver refused to give further information and the agriculture and forestry departments are investigating the matter.

The cats are at present to be found at 359 Puzhu Lu in Pukou District. They are said to be in a bad condition with some already dying.
