The Jiangsu Grand Theatre’s 2019 summer season conference was held last week, upstairs in the theatre’s multi-functional hall, in which was revealed its new performance season will begin tomorrow, 28 March, and last until 31 August.
Audiences can look forward to more famous masterpieces from all over the world and here in China, covering many artistic fields such as music, opera, dance, Chinese Opera and children’s drama. There will be a total of 66 summer performances.
In terms of musicals, “Cats”, one of the world’s four major musicals that made its debut at the Jiangsu Grand Theatre last year, will reappear this season in July and August. Another new Broadway musical, by the mastermind that is Andrew Lloyd Weber in its original version, “Rock School,” will be presented on 17 May.
During the performance season, the Jiangsu Grand Theatre shall combine the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the exchange of Chinese and foreign culture and art, plus the celebration of the second anniversary of the Jiangsu Grand Theatre.
To mark PRC’s 70th birthday, the summer theatre season shall also contain many popular red classics, such as the Long Shadow Orchestra’s “Salute to the Red Classic” concert, and the Xi’an Drama “Liu Qing”; two shows that bear witness to, according to the conference, “The grand and glorious course of the country’s birth and development”.
For fans of heavyweight classical music, a number of world-class concerts, including the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, will also come to the stage. Expect also the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra and the historic New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
When it comes to drama, this season’s highlight at the theatre is undoubtedly and the classic drama “Don Juan” from the Mariinsky (Kirov) Theatre, St. Petersburg, Russia.
Speaking with The Nanjinger, Zhang Jiahui, Jiangsu Grand Theatre employee, said, “Musicals and dramas are the most popular performance for audiences, especially worldwide classics like the Mariinski ballet dancers. In order to improve the general artistic atmosphere of the city, Jiangsu theatre will import more and more international dramas”.
