Witnesses flooded the scene, wondering what had just happened in their community. Whatever it was, it was serious. There had obviously been a fire but rumours were quickly spreading among them that a murder had also just been committed in their midst.

Emergency services in our city received the call at approximately midday yesterday, 12 May. Someone had been killed in a first floor apartment in a residential community along Qinhong Lu in Nanjing’s Qinhuai District.

But that was not all. The scene was also on fire. While firefighters went to work, police were able to apprehend the suspect after he had fled the scene.

According to the official police report released yesterday evening by the Qinhuai Branch of the Nanjing Public Security Bureau, the suspect, surnamed Dong (董) is a male aged 40 years and hailing from Huaiyuan County of Anhui Province.

Dong was at present working in Taizhou of our own Jiangsu where he also has a criminal record of robbery. Dong had come to Nanjing in order to settle an emotional dispute with a lady surnamed He.

Dong carried with him a carried a homemade electric shocker as he sneaked over the perimeter wall of the residential community in question.

Having broken into He’s apartment, Dong lay in wait for her son to come home.

When He’s son arrived, Dong surprised him and took advantage of his unpreparedness to use the zapper on him. He’s son died of electrocution, reported The Paper this morning, 13 May.

Dong then fled the scene to be subsequently captured and arrested by Nanjing Police. An explanation for the fire has not been released at this time. Neither have any further details emerged as to the nature of the electrocution device employed by Dong in the committing of his crime.

At present, the cases of both the murder and fire are under further investigation.
