Preliminary city entries are now being sought into the international short video competition “Foreigners on China”. Those who enter are in the running for a cash prize of US$5,000 (¥34,000) an all expenses paid trip to Beijing, recognition, introductions to 20 of China’s most notable video making companies, ongoing cooperation with the Nanjing government and access to the Chinese market.

Recognising worldwide popularity for how short videos are bringing people together, and hoping to participate more in connecting people from around the world with China, the Chinese central government has launched the short video competition that seeks entries from foreigners, focusing on showcasing China from their perspective.

In less than 5 minutes, hopeful winners will have told visual stories that “make a difference”, with a focus on China going global, reform and development, Chinese culture and much more (see full details online). If you live in Nanjing and enjoy video making, then this is the perfect opportunity for you.

Entries to the competition from foreigners currently or previously residing living in Nanjing should align with the subject of Viewing Nanjing from a Foreign Perspective. The Nanjing winner will then be chosen to also participate nationwide.

Applicants may submit videos from 20 October, 2018 until 20 November, 2018. Only purely original creations submitted by the individual who has created the film will be accepted. The short film must be no longer than 5 minutes and any individual may not submit more than three videos.

Nanjing entries must fully reflect the unique cultural heritage and spirit of Nanjing, while displaying a good sense of the times with a high-level of artistic appeal. It is recommended that people and stories featured in the films reflect ordinary Nanjing people, and promote greater communication between the hearts and minds of the people, and increased interaction between foreigners and local Nanjingers.

Films that will be considered may also reflect Nanjing’s rapid development, the qualities of the city and expectations for the future, in addition to stories about foreign entrepreneurship, work-life, friendship, love and travel.

The Nanjing government expressed to The Nanjinger their interest in “life-like & natural” films, possibly shot with an iPhone, for example. This is an opportunity for creative foreigners in Nanjing to film the city from their own perspective. Those who already vlog, or upload videos to YouTube are already off to a good start. Those who operate a little more high tech are also welcome, for the competition is open to all.

As one of the media outlets via which videos can be submitted, The Nanjinger has created a simplified submissions process for those interested in entering, waiving the need for all entries to have English subtitles or dubbing, for example. The Nanjinger will also assist those who become short-listed in preparation for the final stages of the competition.
