With another holiday just around the corner, and the biggest of the year at that, time to brave the crowds again or take things a little slower and closer to home? Introducing “Lollipop Lighthouse”.

It’s recently become the hot photo opportunity locale in Nanjing. Situated on the islet of Jiangxin Zhou, the Yangtze River flows slowly here. An accompanying cool breeze from the River makes it a good place to relax.

Many people choose to sit by the river and enjoy the sunset quietly; athletes will run along the road; parents ride in teams with their children. And as the Yangtze Evening News reports, many newlyweds take wedding photos by the Lighthouse.

Until more recent years, Jiangxin Zhou was better known as “Grape Island”, as the place to go to buy locally-grown gapes in the warmer months.

As a sufficiently large island in the Yangtze River, Jiangxin Zhou was also where to see impromptu ship repair in action, together with villages etching out a living thanks to their local produce.

Such traditional ways of life are now largely a thing of the past. Today, the islet is all about cutting-edge bio farming, other sustainable practices and, as is now evident, the opportunities afforded by social media.

Being almost complexity flat, the entirety of Jiangxin Zhou is ideal for cycling. And during National Day, heading out to see the Lollipop Lighthouse will likely be best done by taking public transport, followed by a shared bike.

Take Metro Line 10 to Jiangxin Zhou station, and then find a bike outside exit 1. Access is also possible after walking the Nanjing Eye to its northern end.

The Lollipop Lighthouse is located along Jiangdi Lu which skirts the south eastern banks of Jiangxin Zhou.
