What started as continuous rain two days ago has now culminated in a full-blown snow fest hailed as the biggest amount of snow expected for the year of the horse.

While Saturday seemed to confirm speak of a blossoming spring with ten degrees and sunshine, Nanjing’s residents woke up on Sunday to a never-ending stream of rain that brought a breath of fresh but also cold air. The two-day aquatic marathon turned into sleet over night and ended in a visit by the “Snow Girl”, as she is known in the Chinese realm. To the despair of frost-o-phobes within 72 hours temperatures had dropped by 10 degrees.

The sudden metrological flip in February has comes as a great surprise as the general consensus was predicting a snowless winter when the streets had remained free of frosty whiteness by the end of January. February on the other hand, has turned into the “month of snow” as on 5th February a cold front accompanied by a belated winter wonderland arrived on Nanjing’s doorstep. The fortunate couples of Nanjing got a short respite of the cold just in time for Valentine’s Day, which indeed turned out to be temporary as today marks the 6th day of snow not only this month but in total for the year.

Continued snowfall is expected throughout the night and on Wednesday. Thursday will see a gradual increase in temperature, with predictions promising the thermometer will climb back up to ten degrees in time for the weekend.

A look out of the window confirms that far from melting away, for now the snow his here to stay. At least this weather makes for wonderful winter motifs.
