As pet popularity rises in Nanjing, more and more owners wish to be accompanied by their pets when they travel. Rising demand for pet travel has given way to Nanjing Lukou International Airport’s latest service; the  pet freight.

Officially launching the service on 3 September, 2018, pet dogs with domestic destinations can be transported by air cargo, with a one-stop pet shipping service is now provided by airline freight handlers.

According to the airport, via this service, pets can now travel alone without the owner needing to be on the same flight. Being transported by freight, fewer restrictions apply to the quantity and size of animals.

The Nanjinger spoke with Nanjing based Upet to solicit their opinion on the service. “Well there are both advantages and disadvantages to this. The biggest disadvantage is whether pet safety can be guaranteed. Instead of staying in the cabin, they will be treated like luggage”, said Dave Zhai.

The new pet shipping procedure is as follows:

Shipper needs to provide an Animal Quarantine Certificate, issued by an animal health supervision agency.

Packaging containers must meet airport requirements. (Nanjing Airport Cargo currently only accepts pet containers that have been filed with the airline).

Booking the ticket should be done well in advance due to number of restrictions.

Pet Prep; fasting and urinating needs to be done before the flight, pets need to be delivered 3-4hrs before flight departure.

Pet Pickup; Consignees need to be at the airport before the flight lands and if delivery is needed one should pay the fee in advance.

“The advantages to this service is that the owner can now choose a more suitable time to move their pets; they no longer need the help of agents, so its become cheaper and it’s now easier to transport larger dogs”, said Zhai.

At present, Shenzhen Airlines and China Southern Airlines are working in cooperation with Nanjing Airport to operate the pet service. Combined, the two airlines offer 30 domestic routes, as reported by Yangtze Evening Post.
