23 June, Nanjing, saw defendant Zhao sentenced to nine years imprisonment and fined ¥10,000 forattacking and attempting to rob a doctor. The trial lasted no longer than two hours after which it was reported Mr. Zhao pleaded guilty.

Desperate for money, Zhao reportedly walked into the People’s Hospital of Jiangsu Province to look for a target. After spotting Dr. Sun Moumou he lied about needing to consult the doctor over his “girlfriend’s father’s liver illness”. After the doctor requested to see the father’s report, Zhao said he would return the next day with said report.

The next morning Zhao entered the office of Sun and handed him fake documents and a “red packet”. He then pulled out a knife and demanded the doctor hand over his watch and all his money. After the doctor refused, a scuffle ensued, in which the doctor suffered only minor injuries, managing to pin Zhao down while directing the knife away from him calling for help.

The sentencing comes as no surprise as the medical community in China more than ever before fears for its safety. China has seen a sharp rise in hospital attacks on doctors and nurses over recent years.
