With a wet and windy weekend on the way, better batten down the hatches and make plans to stay home. Between now and Monday, strong winds and an accumulative rainfall of up to 130 mm are expected in many parts of Nanjing.

According to the latest meteorological data analysis, it is predicted that Nanjing will have continuous precipitation until the morning of 16 May. During this time, winds may reach gale force 7, gusting to 9, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

The relevant departments in each and every district of Nanjing have been placed on high alert. Appropriate flood controls have been implemented, including dropping the water level of the city’s Xuanwu Lake.

The sluice gates of many dams in Nanjing have also been opened to improve flood control and drainage conditions, reports Nanjing Daily.

Important public facilities, including tunnels, bridges and subways have flood-prevention defences in place, as have low-lying areas of the city.

In addition, the private sector is being urged to strengthen the safety inspections of buildings that may pose a danger in high winds, including construction sites, high-altitude structures, temporary work sheds and advertising billboards.

This evening, 14 May, shall see showers or thunderstorms, with a rainfall of 40-70 mm in some parts and winds from the east, gale force 4, to southwest, gale force 5-6, gusting to 8-9; 20-27°C.

Tomorrow May 15 shall see showers or thunderstorms, with a rainfall of 30-60 mm in some parts and winds from the southwest, gale force 5, gusting to 5-7; 22-31°C.

Sunday, May 16, shall see showers or thunderstorms with reduced rainfall in the morning. The afternoon shall bring showers that gradually peter out, with southwest winds turning northwest, gale force 5-6, gusting to 7; 19~26°C.
