Wuhan may have stolen the headlines for its building of two hospitals in record time, but Nanjing is only one step behind. The city’s Vulcan Mountain Hospital that commenced on 1 February now stands ready to accept Covid-19 patients.

It’s being called the Emergency Project of Nanjing Public Health Medical Centre (NPHMC). Located in Tangshan Town, famous for its hot spas, in Jiangning District, NPHMC was completed in 2015. The project took home an IPMA (International Project Management Association) Gold Award that same year, in the category Big-Sized Projects.

The same people have brought us Vulcan Mountain (火神山). Nanjing Urban Construction Project Management & Development Co., Ltd. had the design drawings completed in 24 hours. Site access roads were built overnight. At its peak, 2,300 people were working on site, reports Dissemination Nanjing.

The actual building of Nanjing Vulcan Mountain Hospital was completed on 13 February. The project manager was quoted as saying that in less than 2 weeks, the construction team achieved that which normally takes a year and a half.

The last few days have been mainly taken up in meeting the needs of the hospital; installing beds, related medical equipment, etc.

Vulcan Mountain Hospital features a number of state-of-the-art medical facilities. Negative Room Pressure is employed to prevent cross infection between places. By generating a low-air-pressure isolation room, air will flow in but not out, preventing contamination to the outside world.

Then there are the transfer cabins (above) for the provision of patients’ meals and medicines. Only one of the doors at each end of the cabin may be opened at any time. Ultraviolet lamps inside disinfect items placed therein to avoid infection.

The foundations and sewage collection system of Vulcan Mountain Hospital have a design life of 50 years. With only little modification, the facility can be used as a permanent building for 10 years.

NPHMC’s Emergency Project occupies an area of approximately 6,000 square metres, as phase one of a total potential of 40,000 square metres.
