A recent court hearing in Beijing highlights safety flaws in China’s unstoppable express delivery industry, after an express courier deliveryman injured a customer in her own home. The lady in question is suing the courier company for ¥760,000.

After purchasing goods online on 11 June, 2017, Ms Zhang Jing (pseudonym), received notice that her package had been sent with the delivery company Shentong Express. However, when the parcel never appeared, Zhang immediately called to complain about delivery man, Wang, who was supposed to have dropped off the package.

The express courier company’s rule that all packages must be signed for by 2pm posed a problem when Zhang was not present to sign for it. Wang is said to have told Zhang that he would sign for it and leave the package at a certain pick-up point. When Zhang came to collect the parcel later that day she found it was nowhere to be seen.

After having called Shentong customer service and complaining several times, staff were deducted ¥200 as a result. As reported by The Paper, Wang said, “I just wanted her to withdraw her complaint. After all, customer service shouldn’t get punished by ¥200 for no reason. She said she would complain to the end”. He therefore went over to Zhang’s apartment in order to convince her to withdraw her complaints.

“At that time [subsequent to the attack], I proposed that I could pay four or five thousand yuan for medical expenses, but she did not agree. I thought it was over”, Wang is reported to have said at the first court hearing. Zhang is seeking ¥760,000 in compensation and an apology.

The court heard that Wang had become violent after Zhang insulted him at her apartment. He is accused of injuring Zhang with a stone that he said he carried “for protection”. Said to have attacked Zhang in her own home, the hospital diagnosis revealed the assault caused scalp laceration, scalp hematoma, head injury, plus multiple soft tissue injuries to the left forearm, left wrist, left hand and upper abdomen. The attack also left Zhang with neurological symptoms as a result of trauma to the brain. She is said to now suffer from depression, anxiety, delusional symptoms and sleep disorders, requiring long-term treatment, as a result of the attack.

“I wear the stone as self-defence. I usually put the stone in the car. This time I had it on my person. I beat her against the bed and she bit me”, Wang said. He claims he never thought she hadn’t received the package. Shentong Express Courier has since issued a public apology on its official Weibo account.
