500 outbreaks of cancer in the nearby city of Yangzhou have left local people wondering whether their beloved “Yangzhou Chao Fan” is all its, er, fried up to be.

An urban gastroenteroscope examination of the 500 people revealed multiple alarming cancer cases related to the gut.

Helicobacter pylori was mentioned as a factor related to a possible stomach-causing cancer. It is found in the stomach and is present in people who have chronic gastritis and ulcers. However, Helicobacter pylori is found in nearly 50 percent of the world’s population. It is also especially prevalent in developing countries.

It remains in question why such a large number of people in the one area have all been diagnosed with the same form of stomach/gut related cancer. The infected are people reported to be “strong”, “healthy” and without any prior symptoms.

One thing remains; Yangzhou Chao Fan, or Yangzhou Fried Rice, is one of the most famous and well-liked dishes in all of China, and one that is in good renown the world over.

Most of patients suffering from this outbreak are 40 years and above and all seemed in “good physical health”, before undergoing any tests. “I really did not expect that I could eat and drink myself, but I rarely even have a small cold, but I would find cancer,” one patient told the Yangzhou Evening News.

Dr. Ding Yanbing highlighted that gastrointestinal cancer has always been a high incidence disease in Yangzhou. Based on his time spent clinically researching and experiencing this, his ultimate opinion is that an unhealthy diet is the main cause.

“Eating too hot, too spicy and other irritating foods; eating fast, and [being] overworked are the causes of the disease. Residents of rural areas often eat pickled products as well, which can also cause digestive tract tumours”, he said.

The debate as to whether a national dish of China can actually cause the onset of cancer, continues to rage.
