This day, 28 October, in 1996, “The Good Man of Nanking: The Diaries of John Rabe”, was published. Over eight volumes, these dusty historical materials, recording in detail the inside story of the Nanjing Massacre by the Japanese army, was made public by Rabe’s granddaughter, to huge repercussions around the world for their effectively refuting the cover ups made by some Japanese far-right figures in the years prior.
