With the whole company having had COVID, we thought we’d celebrate. That and the new year, for as 2023 dawned, US-pizza giant, Domino’s, opened yet-another branch in Nanjing, one near to this publication’s headquarters.

With a solid reputation dating back to 1960, it’s a wonder we had stayed away for so long. But then, we’re a suspicious, cynical bunch at the best of times.

So what’s not on the menu? That’s the question to be begged, with Domino’s offering no less than 408 different pizza combinations; 34 pizzas and 12 types of crust, including those stuffed varieties with which local diners are so bizarrely taken. Add in a the double-decker option, that’s 714 combinations. Surely something for everyone.

And in an attempt to corner the market and take a slice of business from nearby KFC, Domino’s features an array of accompaniments, everything from chicken wings to lava cake. The latter, by the way, (small and a little pricey perhaps, at ¥17) is standout.

Speaking of prices, when a new branch of Domino’s opens, that’s the time to get in there. An opening promotion for a 10-day period saw prices cut by as much as half.

So we gorged.

But disappointment lay in store, pardon the pun. For on our third visit, we were politely told ordering needed to be done using Domino’s WeChat mini program, one which necessitates an extremely troublesome sign up process. Even while standing in the shop. We simply up and left in disgust.

Then the time came for this review, forcing us back into the store. The pleasant service had returned, together with the innovative and fun system whereby a code for the locker in which your goodies await is simply texted to you. They said about 20 minutes; the code took 11. It was a busy-Saturday evening too; impressive.

Domino’s for sure will not be winning “Best Pizza in Nanjing” in their lifetime, but it remains a dependable option in the absence of a better alternative. And with their own branded fleet of delivery riders and bikes, they also happen to hold remarkably true to their “30 minute” promise.

Domino’s has 34 locations in Nanjing, at time of writing. Find one via this link, pop in to pick up in person or order on WeChat.
