August 24th, the world’s first commercial-grade, ultra-wideband Visible Light Communication (VLC) chipset was unveiled at the debut of the Zhibo Fair in Chongqing.

Said to be 10 times faster than 5G, the chipset supports high-speed transmissions of gigabits per second, which marks China’s entry into the industry.

“Communication with visible light is not only safe, stable, fast, and efficient, but also low-cost”, said Xi Jiangxing, an academic from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, in his speech.

The blog visiblelightcomm.com, that is dedicated to Visible Light Communications, states that, “In literal terms any form of information that can be sent using a light signal that is visible to humans could be considered to be VLC, but by our definition we should be able to see the light, but cannot “see” the data. So although there seems to be no universally agreed definition of VLC is, we can at least agree what we mean by VLC”.
