A pair of cassowaries, the so called most dangerous bird in the world, successfully hatched out three babies, which is unprecedented in China, revealed Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo on Sept 23.
After natural hatching, three cassowary babies broke off the egg shells on July 24. And they have grown well under meticulous care during the past two months and will soon meet the tourists.
The cassowary couple are now both 12 years old and have lived together for 8 years. Although they laid eggs each year during the breeding season, no baby bird was successfully hatched out before due to the bird’s nature instinct of quiet-loving and being vulnerable to noises. After the cassowaries were moved to the Australian area of the zoo where the living condition is similar to their hometown, they finally hatched out their babies.
Mr Liu, a zookeeper, told to the reporter that it’s the cassowary father rather than the mother that incubates the egg.
