It’s a timely story at thenanjinger.com this week. A man had been discharging the waste into the aquaducts of Nanjing since 2007, and has now been brought to justice with a fine of almost 2 million yuan. The waste liquid containing aniline, bromine, sulfide and silver, has the potential to cause birth deformities and bring on cancer.

What can be done by a simple Nanjing resident to support the big national environmental push? In this era of social media, finding a small personal step, and promoting it can make a big difference. Perhaps something as simple as the ubiquitous drink straw. It has been estimated that, just in Nanjing, at least 200 million straws are used once and thrown away. Deadly pollution to marine life, and it doesn’t go away. We don’t use a straw at home. Just say “No” to the straw next time you are having dinner or a drink out. Spread the message.

Have a great Spring Festival! We’ll be back in two weeks.
